Thanks Simon,

I agree there's a real risk that the technology becomes the distraction while meaning in our lives is stripped away. There's no avoiding the excesses of media - crass commercialism, celebrity worship and dumbing down to get a cheap laugh - and I'm sure we'll see the same tactics with AR. My hope is that overcrowded minds instinctively reject mindlessness only to survive. The positive potential of AR is staggering, the crass exploitation unlimited. Let's hope we survive with our minds intact. Thanks for the input and good luck with the shoot. Simon

"From desktops to laptops and now mobile phones, the online, screen-driven experience has overwhelmed our direct experience of the real world. And while the rationale is exhilarating to some, it’s rightly disconcerting to others. Here’s how Daniel Sanchez-Crespo, a project leader at the Barcelona firm, Novarama, put it: “The real world is too boring for many people. By making the real world a playground for the virtual world, we can make the real world much more interesting..."
In many ways I pull out Nietsche in a Harpers article referring to "The Numbing of the American Mind." Nietsche said, back in the day, "......the massive influx of impressions is so great; surprising, barbaric, and violent things press so overpoweringly---"balled up into hideous clumps"--in the youthful soul; that it can save itself only by taking recourse in premeditated stupidity..." Could social media be the superficial shrine of the (last) and new decade? I think Nietsche meant stupidity as in clogged, anesthetized. Numb.
Journalism is already "balloon boy bathos" because we need extremes to take notice, jarring our view away from an amalgam of media to tune in -- only to find out it's superficial celebrity, yet again numbing us all, returning our gaze to technology, natural things that have become their own icons... not sinve we landed on the moon and found absolutely nothing has there been so traumatic a void in our human relationships. And, yes, I say this to open the discourse...
All I know is tomorrow I shoot an extraodinary artist Mattia Biagi, creating a new tar piece that I'm capturing on the now defunct kodachrome 64 and super8mm film. No virtual environment in site!
Thanks for the article Simon...

Hi Ramo,

Thanks. I did see Layar in the NYT article. That's where I found the Sony PSP reference. I just wanted to include one version of different application of AR. Thanks, though. I tweak the post to include it. I think your technology is amazing.
