Each year the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) puts on a great event that brings
together the broadcasting community to share the latest insights, trends and best practices of the industry. It’s being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center and I’m excited to be providing a keynote in the Main Session on April 9th.
My session will focus on why the future of profit is purpose. This is critical not only to the
broadcaster’s themselves but also to the communities they serve. Local television,
news, and radio broadcasters deeply understand their responsibility toward
local communities and for years have demonstrated this in meaningful ways that range from
blood drives to disaster relief to public service announcements. The expectation from viewers and listeners that brands do good continues to increase and while this is a responsibility, it’s also an opportunity for them to maintain their relevance, engagement and advocacy at a time when technology continues to disintermediate well established media practices.
The focus of my keynote will be the transition from being a broadcaster that delivers a positive
impact in local communities in tactical ways, to one that is consistently demonstrating a
commitment to purposeful or conscious business leadership. This begs several questions including:
- What’s the difference between what broadcasters are already doing and how a
purposeful brand should behave?
- What must change inside your organization to intimately and authentically demonstrate a commitment to conscious business?
- What must happen in terms of a broadcaster’s marketing to elevate their engagement their viewers and listeners to become a community architect?
- What obstacles must local broadcasters overcome in order to move beyond legacy thinking and behaviors to become a conscious business leader?
I’ll be looking at many of the leading broadcasters on the national stage including Hearst Television Broadcasting, Nexstar Media Group and Cox Media, as well as brands outside the industry demonstrating conscious business leadership that drives growth and impact. I also have the pleasure of doing a further session with Roy Spence from The Purpose Institute who will be sharing insights of his exciting new project called ‘The Promise Land’. This project is focused on restoring the values on which this country this country was built and reminding us what connects us rather than divides us. So please join me at the NAB Show and you can find all the details here.
